Timeline

If there is something that defines Álvaro José Hodeg Chagüi as a cyclist, it is love. The love for what he does, the love for the bicycle, the love for the sport of the cranks, the speed, the asphalt and the suffering.

Everything started in Montería. Álvaro, the son of Álvaro and Elsa María, was always passionate about sports, which also helped him to direct his energy. I had already gone through football, volleyball and tennis. That's where the bicycle arrived, the one that was always his love.

At the age of 14 he left mountain biking, where he won several regional competitions. In 2010 he began to ride the road bike and began to go out with his father to Ciénaga de Oro, 37 kilometers from Montería, and to Planeta Rica, one hour from Montería.
What he has achieved he has done through hard work, sacrifice, dedication," says his father, who also remembers how he learned to ride a bicycle. The pedal of the Deceuninck - Quick Step took his first pedaling in the parking lot of his house. That's where the story of this packer began.

Despite this, it was a trip to Medellín, where his godfather lived, which convinced him that cycling was going to be his way of life. When he arrived, he wanted to go to the capital of Antioquia to finish his studies and train in a cycling league more organized and with more tradition than the Cordoba.

In the City of eternal spring he developed his qualities and caught the attention of the then national coach of the track, Jhon Jaime González. That's how he came to the 2014 Pan-American Juvenile of Aguascalientes. The bet on "Millo" came out and Hodeg was bronze in the speed test.

One thing led to the other and suddenly the Coldeportes noticed the packer project that was the monteriano. Manager Gustavo Villegas and technical director Carlos Mario Jaramillo did not hesitate and hired him.

Jesús Piedrahíta, administrative manager of the team, recalls that Álvaro burst into tears when he was handed his uniform and bicycle after signing his first contract. "I will never forget," Piedrahita told El Tiempo.

The Cordovan shared his first pedals with Fernando Gaviria and the sprinter Juan Esteban Arango. But it was only until 2016 that he shined with 3 victories in the Vuelta a Chiriquí (Panama).

He returned to attract attention and went to try the Deceuninck Quick Step after participating in the World Cup in Richmond 2015, where he played. Then, he returned to the Coldeportes and participated in national competitions, such as Vuelta al Valle, where he won the first stage.

His good legs made him worthy of a place in the Colombia team, which went to the Tour de l'Avenir. After 4 top 5 in the first 4 stages, Álvaro managed to raise his arms in the fifth and that same was confirmed as the new runner of the then Quick-Step Floors.

In 2 years in the World Tour, the numbers of the Cordovan are incredible. In his debut season he won the Handzame Classic and won stages in the Volta a Catalunya, the Tour of Poland, the Tour of Germany and the Tour of Turkey.

In 2019, he takes a win in a stage of the Tour Colombia, where he also dressed as leader of the youth and the general.
: Your father knows it well. Álvaro "is passionate about cycling, he loves cycling, he does it with pleasure, with love and that has made things easier" and that is why he dreams of seeing him compete in one of the 3 Grand Tours.
